You can’t polish a s**t situation but…

We all know 2020 is not the year it was meant to be for a lot of people. Buying houses, weddings, parties, travelling, promotions, holidays and more have been put on hold. People have also lost their jobs including myself.

Looking out for 2021!

I’m trying to stay positive during this time as much as possible but I am aware that it is all a bit depressing. I just wanted to let people know who may be in a similar situation or may be struggling in a different way, please don’t let this drag you down. It will be so easy to go down a rabbit hole of gloom but it will get better. As my friend said ‘you can’t polish a shit situation’ and it is a crappy situation but we can manage it as best we can for ourselves.

Personally, I have found structuring my days and setting myself challenges has helped these past few months whilst furloughed. October was Sober October, 31 days with zero alcohol. This month I will attempt Natural November (Yes I like alliteration), attempting to eat only natural, unprocessed foods. I haven’t yet decided on December, any ideas welcome! I also set To Do lists for the day; update CV, find two jobs to apply for and complete applications frequently pop up. A priority is to add an hour for the gym (pre lockdown) or for a walk. Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s important for your mind, body and soul. They don’t seem like big things but they make a big difference.

Below are some apps I have found helpful over the past 8 months:

Headspace

Meditation app Headspace is offering some of its meditation free.

www.headspace.com/covid-19

Countdown Event App

Great for setting yourself goals/challenges or counting down something to look forward to.
Countdown Goals App

Centr App

I used the free trial during the first UK lockdown and ended up paying for the subscription. It’s got recipes, meal plans, classes and more. You can get a 7 day free trial here.

There are also a number of fitness influencers/accounts on Instagram that have free workouts.

Gratitude App

It’s a new one to me but it’s already making me smile. Challenge yourself to write two things you’re grateful for every day during the month of November. Gratitude App.

If you’re feeling low and need to talk to someone visit Mind for a list of different numbers you can call.

Mind.org.uk

Or the NHS has several charities for OCD, Panic Attacks, Anxiety and more listed here.

Lastly, it’s okay to have a bad day! Don’t feel like you need to be constantly on and people pleasing. There’s quite a few of us having bad days, you’re not alone and your friends and family will understand. there will be better times ahead. It might not be next month, especially with another lockdown pending, it might not be for several months but they are coming.

Remember everyone, have empathy, be kind and stay safe!
